Biden Admin’s Claim Republicans Defunded Police Receives Three Pinocchios

The recent claim by officials in the Biden administration that the Republicans, not Democrats, were pushing to “defund the police,” was given “Three Pinocchios” by fact-checkers at the Washington Post on Wednesday.

The Biden administration argued that since Republicans did not support the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan, which included $350 billion in emergency funding for state and local governments, they wanted to defund the police.

The Washington Post reported, “Although Republicans all opposed Biden’s coronavirus relief package, no one voted to cut, or defund, anything. Rather, Democrats proposed $350 billion in emergency funds for state and local governments, and Republicans voted against those extra funds. That’s not a reduction.”

The law says the $350 billion may be used to “respond to the covid-19 emergency or its negative economic impacts, including assistance to households, small businesses, and nonprofits or aid to impacted industries such as tourism, travel, and hospitality; provide premium pay to essential workers or provide grants to employers of essential workers during the covid-19 emergency; provide government services to the extent of the reduction in revenue of such state, territory, or tribal government due to the covid-19 emergency; or make necessary investments in water, sewer, or broadband infrastructure.”

The Washington Post adds, “Police officers are one category of essential workers covered by the law, but they are not mentioned specifically like ‘impacted industries such as tourism, travel, and hospitality’ or ‘water, sewer, or broadband infrastructure.’ …The American Rescue Plan devoted $350 billion to ‘state and local aid,’ a pot of money that was designed for a variety of budget-plugging purposes. Among those is keeping police, teachers and emergency medical technicians at work, but going strictly by the bill text, lawmakers had no guarantee that police would get a slice of the pie.”

In comparison to the Biden administration’s absurd argument, many Democrats have actually defunded their cities’ police departments. In New York City, for example, Democrats stripped $1 billion from the New York Police Department’s budget, which was criticized by more radical Democrats for not being enough. In Los Angeles, Democrats cut the Los Angeles Police Department’s budget by $150 million, which was praised by Vice President Kamala Harris.

Democrats Introduce ‘Transgender Bill Of Rights’

Published

on

On Tuesday, House Democrats introduced a “Transgender Bill of Rights” to “protect and codify the rights of transgender and nonbinary people under the law and ensure their access to medical care, shelter, safety, and economic security.”

Led by Democrat Reps. Pramila Jayapal (WA), David Cicilline (RI), Marie Newman (IL), Mark Takano (CA), and Ritchie Torres (NY), HR 1209 proposes “amending the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sex, including gender identity and sex characteristics in public accommodations and federally funded programs and activities.”

“As we witness Republicans and an extremist Supreme Court attack and roll back the fundamental rights of trans people across our country, and as state legislatures across the country target our trans community with hateful, bigoted, and transphobic attacks, we are standing up and saying enough is enough,” said Jayapal, the chair of the Congressional Progressive Caucus and co-chair of the Transgender Equality Task Force.

“Our Trans Bill of Rights says clearly to the trans community across the country that we see you and we will stand with you to ensure you are protected and given the dignity and respect that every person should have,” Jayapal added.

The bill seeks to increase the ability of children to get permanent and life changing surgeries by “eliminating unnecessary governmental restrictions on the provision of, and access to, gender-affirming medical care and counseling for transgender and nonbinary adults, adolescents, and children.”

The bill will additionally ensure that biological male students are allowed to compete in girls’ sports by amending federal “education laws to ensure that they protect students from discrimination based on sex, including gender identity and sex characteristics, and guarantee students’ right to participate in sports on teams that best align with their gender identity.”

Federal education laws will also be amended to allow students to :use school facilities that best align with their gender identity,” meaning that biological males would be allowed to use girls’ restrooms and locker rooms.

The bill expands beyond “transgender rights” to also ban states from making laws restricting abortion by “codifying the right to abortion.”
