Border Officials Estimate At Least 599,000 Illegal Immigrant ‘Gotaways’ In Fiscal Year 2022
There were reportedly at least 599,000 known “gotaways” at the border in fiscal year 2022 amid a record-breaking illegal immigration crisis in addition to the estimated 2.3 million illegal immigrants encountered by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
“Per CBP source, fiscal year 2022 ended with at least 599,000 known ‘gotaways’ at the border, a significant increase from FY’21 when DHS reported 390,000 gotaways,” Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin wrote on Twitter. “Since the beginning of FY’21, there have now been almost 1 million known gotaways at the border.”
“For comparison, former U.S. Border Patrol Chief [Rodney Scott], who served under both Trump & Biden, tells me that Border Patrol reported 69,000 gotaways in fiscal year 2020, and approximately 200,000 gotaways in 2019 when Trump experienced his surge at the border,” Melugin added.

According to the most recent data from Customs and Border Protection (CBP), border officials encountered more than 203,000 migrants attempting to illegally cross the southern border in August. The figure brought the total number of illegal immigrants encountered by border officials so far in fiscal year 2022 to more than 2 million for the first time ever. The latest numbers put border officials on track to tally over 2.3 million arrests during the 2022 fiscal year, which ends September 30.
