On Monday, San Antonio’s Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar, who is a Democrat, announced that his county was opening an investigation into the 50 illegal immigrants that were flown to Martha’s Vineyard last week by Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.

Salazar admitted that was he was “not able” to name any laws that were broken and he did not name any suspects but he said that he still believes “it’s wrong.” Salazar also claimed that the migrants were “lured” into making the flight, even thought they chose to go on the flight and those who were interviewed appeared to be grateful for the free transportation.

“That does tend to bother me quite a bit,” Salazar said. “And so we are absolutely opening up an investigation into this.”

“I believe people need to be held accountable for it to the extent possible,” he said. “At this point, I’m not able to definitively say here’s the statute that they broke either federal, state or local. But what I can tell you is it’s wrong just from a human rights perspective, what was done to these folks is wrong.”

“From now on out, we’re hoping to talk to some of these these victims and witnesses firsthand to find out what was said what was done, how were you lured into this, and then the full extent of how they were placed in harm’s way,” Salazar continued. “At that point, we will make the determination if there was any criminal activity. Certainly, I can tell you right now, the allegations that we’ve heard, is absolutely distasteful. It’s disgusting.”

However, Venezuelan migrant Mike Betancourt Vivas, who is a 26-year-old construction worker and composer with a wife and two daughters stuck in Colombia, expressed to the Washington Post that he was grateful for the flight and that he is currently searching for a ride to Washington state.

According to the outlet, Betancourt said he does not care about “being a political pawn if it gets him a free ride to Washington.”

“It doesn’t matter to me,” he said. “I just want to go.”
