‘Humanitarian Corridors’ For Ukrainians to Flee were ‘booby-trapped’ with landmines
Roughly 1.7 million people have fled Ukraine in only 11 days after Putin began his invasion. The European Union warned Monday that another 5 million could be fleeing as well. Red Cross workers have said that one of the “humanitarian corridors” was booby-trapped with landmines.
“Horrifying images have laid bare the refugee crisis in Ukraine as Russia continues to shell civilians trying to flee bomb-ravaged cities after Kyiv rejected Moscow’s offer to open ’humanitarian corridors’ when it emerged that some of the routes led straight to its territory” reports The Daily Mail.
Two attempts to open up similar corridors failed after less than an hour because Russian troops kept shooting. Red Cross workers attempting to use one of the corridors out of Mariupol said the route was completely booby-trapped with landmines.
Refugees fleeing in such high numbers are leading to the fastest-growing refugee crisis since the Second World War. On Monday the third round of talks between Ukraine and Russia failed.
Talks occurred in Belarus, where Russia demanded Ukraine cease all military action, change its constitution to enshrine neutrality so it cannot join the EU or NATO, acknowledge Crimea as Russian territory and recognize the separatist republics of Donetsk and Lugansk as independent territories.
One Kremlin spokesman claimed Russia is not attempting to make any additional territorial claims on Ukraine, despite its continued military advance. “We really are finishing the demilitarization of Ukraine. We will finish it. But the main thing is that Ukraine ceases its military action. They should stop their military action and then no one will shoot” said the spokesman.
