McCarthy Threatens DHS Secretary Over His ‘Dereliction Of Duty’ In Border Crisis
During a press conference on Tuesday, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) said that the incoming Republican majority will investigate and potentially impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas over his inability to handle the illegal immigration crisis at the southern border.
“[Mayorkas’s] actions have produced the greatest wave of illegal immigration in recorded history. Our country may never recover from Secretary Mayorkas’ dereliction of duty,” McCarthy said. “This is why, today, I am calling on the secretary to resign. He cannot and must not remain in that position.”
“If Secretary Mayorkas does not resign, House Republicans will investigate every order, every action, and every failure will determine whether we can begin impeachment inquiry,” he continued. “If secretary Mayorkas was in charge of any company, he would have been fired by now for the failures of what he has caused.”
McCarthy’s comments come after Customs and Border Protection (CBP) reported that border officials encountered over 230,000 migrants attempting to illegally cross the southern border last month – an all-time record for the month of October.
CBP officials additionally told Fox News that there were about 64,000 “gotaways” in October, meaning that more than 2,000 illegal immigrants managed to escape border patrols each day.
