As the illegal immigration crisis at the southern border continues, record levels of fentanyl have been seized by border officials in Texas with a more than 1,000% increase from 2020 to 2021.

“TX Governor Abbott announces that in 2020, Texas DPS seized 70lbs of fentanyl. In 2021, they seized 964lbs of fentanyl, a more than 1,000% increase,” Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin wrote on Twitter. “In 2019, there were 277 fentanyl deaths in TX. In 2021, there were 1,700, mostly in counties away from the border.”

According to a press release from Texas Governor Greg Abbott’s office, “DPS’ Houston crime lab has tested almost 13,700 lbs. of counterfeit drugs in the past 12 months and inventoried more than 85,000 seized drugs, including more than 9,700 deadly opioids like fentanyl. In Texas, almost 1,700 fentanyl-related deaths were reported in 2021 alone.”

The press release added that Texans “can play a significant role in stopping the spread of fentanyl and fentanyl-related deaths by educating their children about the deadliness of the drug and how it can be disguised in counterfeit prescription drugs.”

“Because of President Biden’s open border policies, deadly fentanyl is flooding America, with enough seized lethal doses to kill almost every man, woman, and child in the nation,” Abbott said. “Mexican drug cartels are smuggling fentanyl into our country any way they can. It is laced into every other street drug available, as well as being disguised as legal prescriptions, as this lab has discovered. Because of the folks at this lab, who handle potentially lethal drugs every day, we are saving the lives of thousands of Texans from the deadly scourge of fentanyl.”

The news comes as illegal immigration has reached the highest level on record with nearly 240,000 migrants being encountered at the southern border in May – a record that has been broken repeatedly under the Biden administration.

“There were an unprecedented 239,416 migrant encounters at the Southern border in May, CBP reports. This is the highest monthly total in DHS history, beating the record that was set the month before in April w/ 234,088,” Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin wrote on Twitter.
