Slavery Reparations Bill Moves Forward in House Along Party Lines
Legislation that was first introduced in 1989 has made a comeback from Democrats in the House late Wednesday. The legislation would study the issue of awarding reparations to the descendants of American slaves.
The House Judiciary Committee, in a vote along party lines, sent the bill to the House floor. The bill instructs that a 13-person committee will consider a “national apology” recommendation along with any “appropriate remedies” to Congress.
The study will include the legacy of American slavery, racist laws and how everything has affected not only formerly enslaved people but also any descendants. 25 Democrats supported the advancement of the bill, while 17 Republicans opposed it.
Democrat Representative from Texas, Sheila Jackson Lee, introduced the current version of the bill in January. “The goal of this historical commission and its investigations is to bring American society to the new reckoning with how our past affects the current conditions of African Americans and to make America a better place to help and truly study the disadvantage,” said Jackson Lee.
However, it’s not just history that occurred decades ago that Democrats are using for justification to reintroduce the notion. Recent racial injustices, as well as the novel coronavirus global pandemic, are amongst so-called struggles that must be addressed.
Jackson Lee added that the measure would help “confront the stark societal disparities occurring in the African American community today” as she brought up how reparations would help address health inequities caused, or persisted, throughout the pandemic during the bill’s markup hearing.
Jackson Lee’s bill has over 170 co-sponsors, and both House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and President Biden have expressed support for at least studying the issue. Earlier this week, Biden met with members of the Congressional Black Caucus at the White House, after which Lee told reporters Biden “is committed to his concept. We are grateful for that.”

As an American citizen who happens to be a Black man,, I see this as another tax-and-spend, big government program designed to permanently divide the country…besides where are these clowns going to get the money from? The country is broke especially the federal government and these clowns a.k.a. the Democratic-controlled Congress thinks that money grow on trees; they’re pathetic idiots!!!

They are trying to divide this country. I feel that the Democrats want the whites and blacks to hate each other. Let’s beat them at this game and we all unite to show them that we don’t play their game

This is not fair to non blacks. Where will the money come from? How will they prove that they are decedents from slaves only? Not everyone in the South those days had slaves. What percentage of plantations had slaves? Back then, The Democratic party started the KKK and The Republican party helped the slaves.

Al Sharpton and other black ‘leaders’ (read Obama) have determined that a fair and equitable reparation of $350,000 per person for the entire 42 million black Americans is in order. Multiply 42 million times 350,000 and see how many trillions that is! The Dems have 2 ways of funding their fantasy bills: 1)print worthless money until the paper runs out or 2) tax the working and middle class Americans to actual death. Or both and in that order.

So I see the point here, but the ? Is why should I have to pay someone money for something that happened over almost 200 yrs ago. When my Family tree didn’t start on America till around WW1 when Stalin started his persecution of the Jews and my great grand father fled to America so I can’t see why I owe anyone anything for something we had no part in, and I guess well there at it they need to give the Jews reparations for the 400 yrs of Egptian and 70 yrs of babylonian slavery they endured I mean one good turn deserves another

I thought reparations where given to the first hand victims. Not the descendants, a small percentage of people actually had slaves. My ancestors where to poor to own another person.

Leo,this has got to go down in a big way. I see no reason why this should even be brought up. How many people in the black community did not have ancestors that were in fact slaves? How many came from countries other than Africa? What about the oriental population that lost their properties and lively hoods during WWII internment camps? So now the black members of congress feel that the rest of Americans owe this to the oppressed black community. Do they not realize that they are asking for a revolution? Think about had much more divided this country will become if they pass this. In my life time, I’m 71, I have never seen a party bent on destroying our country and they have done it in only 90 days. So sad that we will become a third world country soon.

Many black folks have good jobs and success others depend on entitlements. Discrimination is not allowed in our society.

Well Al Sharpton is all about money, nothing else.
If they go through with this Shameful, racist, illegal bill then the only equitable amount should be a number that reflects the time of slavery.
So, they could use the amount slaves were required to pay for their freedom.
This is a least a historical fair amount. The families who came from slavery should qualify. You know what? This is currently happening on our Southern boarder right now.
The cartel are stealing children, relocating them to a foreign nation were their human rights are being violated. As they are herding into over populated holding facilities.
Like the slave traders. Taking humans and bringing them to a new land and subjectively subverting their human rights and enslaving them for life.
I guess the truth is, History repeats itself.
Now that I am thinking about this, it is always the Democratic Party who harms humans and implore human right abuses.
It was the Democrats who supported slavery, it the Democrats who caused our Southern Boarder in the USA to become inhuman to children, the Democrats who started and terrified a nation as KKK, now the Democrats use BLM and Antifa to terrify our nation currently.
Think about that for a minute. They historically and now currently are supporter of terrorists organizations, supporter of human right violations while lecturing us about race.
Wow they are an organization which should be reviewed as a criminal organization. Really sick history.

Let’s call this what it is…a call for a racial war. It’s the only way for the radical socialist party to stay in power; to foment hatred for one another. I pray that the leaders -NOT RACE HUSTLERS- in the AA community will find a way to IMMEDIATELY take action to appeal to their communities by explaining how it is the Democratic party that is lying to them – that you are victims of the white man and the police. They want you to hate your country and those with different skin colors. They want you to depend of them for existence. The Democratic is the real enemy, they are the party holding you back with their lies and demand your vote.

All I have to say in regard to the U.S. government possibly paying reparations to the Black community; I have a lot of thoughts about this, however, only one I want to share: When slavery was being practiced, the Black people living now were not living when slavery was being practiced. Also, none of the persons responsible for slavery are not alive now. The cost of reparations would cost trillons which would be passed on to the taxpayer. May God help us!

It’s another left-wing sham to fool African-Americans into believing the Dems are the party for them. They’re scared of losing their support, witness the large number of them who switched and voted for Trump. And, it’s another reason they want to control the education system in the US. The brain-washing moves on!

What about awarding reparations to the descendants of Union Civil war Veterans. The whole family, all three brothers, were at Gettysburg July 3, 1863, one is still there.

During the era when most Blacks were enslaved (don’t forget that thousands of Blacks were slave OWNERS — should their descendants be paid reparations, for their having owned slaves?), my ancestors were sleeping in a ditch in Ireland. Why should they be held responsible for slavery, or me, for reparations?
Many thousands of White Americans died in the Civil War, fought to free the Black slaves. Should their descendants now be held financially responsible for the consequences of slavery that so many gave their lives to eradicate?
“Reparations” are in NO WAY really reparations. They are a cynical con-game by hustlers (e.g., Al Sharpton).
