Why would the vice president of the United States have an unpleasant conversation with the leader of another country to discuss a dismal migration crisis when you could talk about happy things, like plants and trees? Kamala Harris has chosen the latter.
In a headline that makes one do a double-take, a New York Post article reads: “VP Harris to meet with Mexican president to talk tree-planting citizenship plan.” It’s exactly as it seems; Mexican president Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador has a tree-planting proposal he will discuss with Harris next month.
First of all, a meeting between the two when migrant crossings between the borders are reaching record-breaking levels is long overdue. Second, tree planting? Foreign nations are having a field day with American politics. Forget the lives of hundreds of thousands of homeless immigrants; the Mexican leader has his initiative, “Planting Life.”
The Mexican leader first pitched his initiative during “Biden’s virtual climate summit at the White House on Thursday and said it could help stem the surge of immigrants to the US border” reports The New York Post. “You, President Biden, can finance the Planting Life program in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador” Obrador said on Thursday.
The initiative would include planting 1 billion fruit and timber trees. “The proposal is that we extend this program to southeastern Mexico and Central America, to plant 3 billion more trees and create 1.2 million jobs” added the Mexican president.
There is one small ask in return. “Obrador proposed the US grant six-month work visas that lead to citizenship to workers who participate in the program” reports the Post. Obrador said he hopes the project will extend into Central America, creates 1.2 million jobs and plant 3 billion more trees. Does this mean agreeing to 1.2 million visas leading to citizenship?
