During Wednesday’s press briefing, White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was unable to answer if the Biden administration would try to shut Twitter down if users posted something the Biden administration “[doesn’t] like” on the platform.

“The president has been very clear in his belief that it is important that social media platforms continue to take steps to reduce hate speech and misinformation,” Jean-Pierre said.

“If you see something that you don’t like, would you try to shut Twitter down?” Fox News reporter Peter Doocy asked.

“Just like everybody else, we very much monitor the news… And Twitter is in the news a lot, so that’s what we’re paying attention to,” Jean-Pierre replied.

The exchange comes just days after Jean-Pierre warned that the Biden administration was “keeping a close eye on” Twitter CEO Elon Musk’s free speech reforms for the platform.

“[Twitter] is something that we’re certainly keeping an eye on,” she said. “We’re all keeping a close eye on this.  We’re all monitoring what’s — what’s currently occurring.  And we see — you know, we see it with our own eyes of what you all are reporting and, just for ourselves, what’s happening on Twitter.”

“Social media companies have a responsibility to prevent their platforms from being used by any user to incite violence, especially violence directed at individual communities, as we have been seeing.  And the President has been very clear on calling that out.  He’ll continue to do that.  And we’re going to continue to monitor the situation,” Jean-Pierre added.
